Nasty women

As I sat down to write this I discovered that Letterboxd is down, both the app and the website, and that's like TikTok not loading for the rest of you. Or maybe Instagram. I don't know, what are you guys addicted to? Reddit? Facebook? Is Tumblr still a thing? [Brief pause]. Oh wow, it actually is.

Anyway, I won't be able to fully function again until my feed of random strangers' over-considered movie reviews is restored. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

🎥 The Drama (HBO)
I don't go to the movies much anymore since I broke up with Alamo Drafthouse (don't make me explain; it's still too painful), so I skipped this when it came out. But it's a good one! The way it is shot and edited has a major impact on the storyline, which makes the whole thing even more enjoyable. It will also be one of those that keeps you thinking for a while after. How dark of a secret would you have to hear to call off your wedding?

📖 East of Eden
Most of the time when you read of the 'greats', it's a slog to get through or boring as hell. So it was a wonderful surprise to discover that Steinbeck dude can really write. This is long - 600 pages - but I swear to god you tear through it. The characters are so richly detailed, they sometimes seem to be in the room with you. But my favorite part is that one of the main characters is a woman and she's a nasty piece of work. That's a rare find in a book of this era. This is going to be a Netflix show in the fall, with Florence Pugh in the nasty role. Read the book now so you can snobbily judge it.

📺 Furious (Hulu)
Speaking of nasty women, this series features several of them, all in multi-layered, nuanced portrayals. If you were a fan of Killing Eve, consider this its grittier, less stylish niece. An FBI agent with a traumatic past chases down a female serial killer, but of course all is not as it seems. This is dropping one episode at a time and driving me crazy.
