Two comedians and an app
It's been 3 weeks! Oh dear, I'm sorry. I have an excellent excuse though, as I was on a writing retreat in Maine last weekend. Yes, I have reached that stage of life. I am wearing drapey clothing of natural fibers and getting in touch with my inner self.
Just kidding. I'm still incapable of formulating my own style and only recently discovered athleisure wear. But I did have a fantastic time in Maine. I'm telling you folks, I belong by and on the sea. And I made some wonderful new bad-ass women friends. More to your interest though, I'm making great progress on my movie book. I'm excited about it and hope you'll buy copies for all your friends. So I can fulfill my dream of living by and on the sea.
To the recs!
🖥️ Pagebound
I'm not normally one to recommend apps to you, but this might be the Goodreads replacement I've long been searching for. Oh please let it be. I hate Goodreads. But I love reading. Join me on there and let's find out together.
📖 The Promise
Following the travails of a white South African family, this is wholly original prose that takes a few minutes to settle into every time you pick it up. But that happens quickly and then you don't want to leave it. A brilliantly crafted story circle that closes perfectly.
🎥 John Candy: I Like Me (Prime)
Man, Dan Aykroyd can write a eulogy. That's the way this documentary starts so you're already crying 30 seconds in. What a lovely human being John Candy was. Full of interviews with people you love - and poor, wrecked Macaulay Culkin - this doc does an excellent job of showing all sides of a guy who sounds like he was one hell of a mensch.
🎥 Thank You Very Much (Tubi)
I've never figured out if I like Andy Kaufman's humor and this didn't help. It is, though, a very well-done portrait of a beloved comedian who was universally acknowledged as damn bizarre. His Mighty Mouse bit on the first SNL episode still makes me laugh but the wrestling stuff? And Tony Clifton? I just don't get it. Have a watch and let me know what you think.
I'm off to Colorado next week and one of our adventures will be visiting The Stanley Hotel, inspiration for The Shining. I'll take pictures of the creepy twins for you. It's still in the mid-90s in Austin, so I'm just going to keep leaving town till that changes.
Have a great week, friends.
xoxo,
Carla
