The Queen and a Robot

The Queen and a Robot

I only saw one Oscar nominated film this week, and it was The Boy and the Heron. While I know it is sacrilege not to wax poetic about a Miyazaki film, I did not like it. It was beautiful to look at it, but I almost fell asleep multiple times. So. Maybe wait for that to hit streaming.

🎥 Forbidden Planet (Tubi)
Every time I've tried to watch one of these schlocky 50s-era sci fi movies, I end up abandoning it 30 minutes in. They're just so bad, and I'm missing the gene that allows one to hate-watch. Forbidden Planet, however, is delightful. I mean, it stars Leslie Nielsen! The plot actually pulls you in, the sets and costumes are fantastic (especially Anne Francis' outfits), and it features probably the most iconic robot in pop culture. You will enjoy watching this, I promise.

📖 Notes on an Execution
This is not your usual serial killer tale. For starters, it doesn't linger on details of his crimes, which is such a refreshing change. Additionally, it gives equal time and emotional attention to every character, from detective to victim to criminal. And keeping it all humming along nicely is a page-turning plot. Just a great read from start to finish.

📖 The Palace Papers
Two books for you this week because I'm on a reading streak this year. Also I feel bad that I never give you anything dishy. Boy does this deliver. It's written by notable magazine editor Tina Brown in the most fabulous of styles—gossipy but intelligent, like you imagine Emma Thompson to be. (In fact, she should read the audiobook of this.) No key member of the royal family escapes scrutiny, and the interesting bits pile up quickly. I admit it gets a little tiresome after a while, but I had to stick it out to get to Harry & Meghan, who are just as insufferable as you assume they are. Also, whenever Prince Charles travels to stay at other people's estates, he brings his own bedroom furniture with him. Not a joke.

Hope your week is wonderful, my friends. This Wednesday's Smart Things will include a look at food and dining trends in 2024, and an examination of the growing ideological gap between men and women (yes, Taylor Swift is involved.) Don't miss out by becoming a Super Friend.
