Sat down to write this and realized I haven't watched a single movie this week. The horror! That's no way to get through the Oscar nominee list. (I am not going to get through the Oscar nominee list.) Instead I've been on a reading kick, so you're getting 2 books and a fun article this week.

đź“– The Light Pirate
Y'allll this was soooo gooood. I finished it in 5 days and didn't want it to end. It's a novel about a girl born during a hurricane in Florida, and how her life unfolds as climate change takes hold and the state is slowly eaten by the ocean. There are multiple shocking deaths as the world changes and society breaks down. But at the center of it is a character you earnestly care about. So it's dystopian but also a character-driven page-turner. It's unique and you'll love it.

đź“– Sure, I'll Join Your Cult
Speaking of unique, meet Maria Bamford. I've never been able to get into her standup comedy but I enjoyed the hell out of this, a memoir of her intense struggles with mental illness. She is painfully honest about everything, which I have much respect for, and frequently laugh-out-loud hilarious. Here's one quote I highlighted:

"I am voraciously supportive of all creative efforts, to the extent that I’ll even acknowledge the craft involved in hate speech. “Bitches ain’t shit” isn’t NOT grammatically tenable and packs a punch."

Funny, right? I got a lot more out of this book than I thought I would. Thank you, Maria.

🖥️ The Best, Weirdest, Wildest Performances
In lieu of a movie recommendation this week, I give you this fun piece by NYT critic Wesley Morris. Featuring awards like Best Acting Above the Nose and Best Theft of a Movie, it's a unique way of recognizing how precise the art of acting can be. The gifs are an added bonus.

Short and sweet this week. I'm going to get my nails done and then buy cat litter. Never say I live a dull life.
