Surface level

I feel like I lived a year in this week. There is a lot of change brewing, making it seem like 500 separate events occur every day, each with its own attendant emotion. I'm shifting focus in how I want to evolve my work personally—more on that after the recs—so I've been deeply introspective lately. That's probably why my media consumption has been surface-level. No French New Wave for you this week, friends. Enjoy!

🎥 Babes
Well I saw it twice this week, in a theater, so that should tell you something. Some are calling it the Bridesmaids of motherhood, and that fits pretty well. Y'all remember when I saw my queen Pamela Adlon at the SXSW panel in March? It was about this movie, which she directed. Babes is hilarious and genuine and a reallllly accurate portrayal of pregnancy and motherhood. (The delivery nurse in the hospital could not be more spot-on). You'll have fun.

📖 Lute
I finished this in 24 hours! It is a short, easy read that pulls you in very quickly. You'll fly through the pages like butter. Reminiscent of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, Lute tells the story of a mysterious British island that must undergo a horrible ritual every 7 years. Complete with a side love story and a surprising twist, it hits all the right notes.

🎥 Jim Henson: Idea Man (Disney +)
You know you're going to cry before you even hit start, so just accept it and lean in. Ron Howard directs and layers the whole thing with just the right amount of whimsy and joy. I feel like Generation X is the luckiest in the world, because we grew up with the imagination of Jim Henson.

A quick personal update! I'm putting some energy into a new side gig for myself, focused on contract writing and helping people write. Whether you want help writing social media posts, are ready to jump into the Great American Novel, or need 500 words on the state of the startup industry, I’m here for you.
