So bad it's good
Hiii. I didn't write last week because I was tired. That's literally the whole reason. In our current national situation, I'm sure you understand.
I did buy a shirt that says, "Read books. Punch Nazis." and wearing that out in public has been enormously satisfying. Otherwise, I seem to be immersing myself further and further into reading, I think in the hopes of getting sucked into another world so deeply that I actually transport there. The fact that one of those books is a history of horror writing - "from Salem to Stephen King" - speaks volumes. ANYway! Since our entire existence is now cringe, here are some movies to accompany it.
🎥 The Poseidon Adventure (Prime)
The saying, "They don't make 'em like this anymore" was possibly invented solely for this movie. A 1972 disaster film that set the bar and then lit it on fire so no one else could meet it, this movie's got everything (cue Stefon's voice): a capsized ocean liner, hysterical attractive blondes who lose their pants, Ernest Borgnine in an undershirt, a Christmas tree ladder, and 8 levels of burned infrastructure. Gene Hackman stars, but Shelley Winters devours the whole screen. Do not miss.
🎥 Burlesque (Netflix)
Look, this stars Cher, Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, Alan Cumming, and (mind-boggingly) Kristen Bell. And the songs are actually great. I'm not sure what else you need to know. With that, here are my top 3 favorite reviewer comments:
"Was this good? Absolutely not. Five stars."
"Alan Cumming is only in this because it’s illegal to make a Cabaret knock-off without him."
"My favorite part was when Christina Aguilera suddenly becomes a real estate professional and teaches Cher about air rights."
🎥 Death of a Unicorn (in theaters)
Don't get me wrong, this is not bad at all. I laughed a hell of a lot and really enjoyed myself. I mean, Paul Rudd is in it, for goodness sake. But it's also about a family of angry unicorns so... They should have leaned harder into the ridiculousness of the concept; they try to be heartfelt at times and that's just dumb. But it's bloody good fun and you should watch it when it comes to streaming.
Phew I'm tired again. I'm going to go watch Saturday Night Live. Are you taking care of yourselves? Please do. Fight the power.
xoxo,
Carla
