Mondo movies

Hi hi! I have seen so many movies lately that I should list it as a part-time job on LinkedIn. During my summer of unemployment, I've done a bunch of Sharp Skirts stuff in the mornings and then about 2 o'clock, find myself in the neighborhood of the remote. It calls to me and I can't not answer. It would be so lonely without me. So today - and since I skipped a post last week - you're getting a super-size list of recs. Hopefully you have some downtime coming up and can enjoy a few of them.

You Were Never Really Here (Prime)
An action thriller turned on its head. It's violent and tense—you never really relax while watching it. But now I want to watch it again without that tension. Every performance by Joaquin Phoenix I see lately is slowly making up for The Joker. Slowly.

Half Nelson (Prime)
And the white-savior-inner-city-teacher trope turned on its head. This is freaking great and also Ryan Gosling.

Suzhou River (Criterion, Kanopy)
I’m not entirely sure what happens in this movie, but don't really care. It was a gorgeous trip to take for an hour and a half; kind of felt like waking from a dream when it was over.

The Intouchables (Prime)
I'm reasonably sure this is a problematic movie that couldn't get made today, but I really enjoyed it. Speaking of tropes, it's the 'Black youth from the streets becomes caretaker of rich white man and teaches him how to be free.' But I still loved it.

Tokyo Godfathers (Tubi)
I don't usually go in for anime, but this is on Letterboxd's Top 250 list so I gave it a try. It's very good! There are a couple of trans slurs in it but block those out and the rest is fun.

Superman (in theaters)
Y'all this is so good. It's hopeful! You know you need that right now. I enjoyed every second. Go see it.

Out of Sight (Criterion)
I'm sure I've recommended this before because I watch it every couple of years. It's an Elmore Leonard story directed by Stephen Soderbergh and it is damn close to perfect. It's hilarious and thrilling and the chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney is so hot the screen melts. If they didn't get together in real life while filming this, they need to apologize to humanity.

Alright you have a lot to do. Get to watching!

xoxo,
Carla
