Moms rule
Happy Mother's Day! If you're willing and able, how about honoring the women in your life by helping them maintain bodily autonomy? Fund Texas Choice is a great organization that has been doing just that for 10 years. Throw them some cash, won't you? On to the recs!
I went to the movies twice this week (bless the Alamo Season Pass), so you get two first-runs. If you need a movie to watch at home, check out Shampoo on Prime and marvel at how Warren Beatty blow-dries that one woman's hair (you'll know it the minute you see it.)
The Fall Guy (in theaters)
The media narrative seems to be that this is a flop, but you know how I love a good argument. It is not! This is the most fun I've had at the movies in years, no joke. It is hilarious, charming, thrilling, and just goddamned delightful. After you see it, you should also watch this Anatomy of Scene narrated by the director, in which Ryan Gosling acts his face off on the way to a 125-foot fall. Is there nothing the man cannot do?
Abigail (in theaters)
It's a ballerina vampire! Do I need to say anything more? Wonderfully bloody (very bloody) fun.
Everybody's in LA (Netflix)
This show is weird. That's why you should watch it. It's an experiment in talk shows, comedy, and celebrity interviews, and I love that Jon Mulaney is willing to throw himself on the public alter so drastically to try it out. It aired live for 6 nights on Netflix, which was an experiment in itself, and featured Mulaney and his friends talking about coyotes, helicopters, and earthquakes. As you may know, he spent the last two years wading through a very nasty drug addiction and his partner's breast cancer, and that seems to have made him say, fuck it. I'm here for it.
That's it for today! I'm going to have a fancy Italian lunch with my kids and then hit some vintage stores on the East side. I hope you're doing something equally frivolous. xoxo
