It's all fine
I mention, likely too frequently, how much I love where I live. It's mainly the location right in the middle of Austin, though the actual inside of my place is cozy and welcoming, with a huge bedroom and closet. But it also has the weirdest set of negatives, to the point that sometimes I consider ditching the whole thing and starting over.
It's insanely buggy, with an ongoing fly problem and steady influx of crawly creatures wandering all over. I once caught my cat torturing a baby grass snake that somehow got in. I'm also reasonably sure it's haunted. Lights and ceiling fans turn on by themselves constantly, sometimes while I'm sitting right under them, and my oldest heard someone whispering in his ear while he was folding clothes. Also I woke up once to find my alarm clock had been moved into another room. Anyway.
The latest adventure started this week when I woke at 4am to some creature trapped in the well of my bedroom ceiling fan. Steve (my cat) was frozen in place staring, as something - small but not small enough for my taste - swished and thumped around in the metal base. I'm assuming something came in through the crawl space in the ceiling and got stuck. It has woken me up two nights in a row. I never hear it during the day though. Oh and there's ceiling plaster all over the ottoman beneath it. SO.
I'm not sure what the moral of all this is, besides putting it in writing so there's evidence when I've been sucked into another dimension and y'all can't find me.
On to the recs!
🎥 The Way Way Back (Prime)
A stacked cast - Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allyson Janney, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, Maya Rudolph (goodness!) - doesn't stop this from being kind of trite. But I enjoyed watching it and found myself thinking about it for a few days. It has one of those storylines that drives me bananas, in which a woman stays with a blatantly cruel man because... she doesn't want to be lonely? You could watch it solely for Janney and Rockwell's performances, though, and be happy.
🎥 Host (Tubi)
If you don't like jump scares, move along to the next item. This movie is absolutely packed with them, and they're all terrifying. I loved it! It was filmed during the pandemic, about six friends who dial into a Zoom meeting to hold a seance. There is something about seeing things happening behind a person while they're facing a screen that makes them extra creepy.
📺 Murderbot (Apple TV)
I've been hearing about this a lot, but didn't think the premise was for me, and I was wrong. It seems super-jokey in the first 10 minutes but then it finds its rhythm and it's hilarious. Also it's Alexander Skarsgard so...
Things are moving fast with Sharp Skirts, so make sure you're on the train. If you're in Austin, come to the party on June 21st and if you're not, follow us on LinkedIn.
Have a great week!
