Into the breach once more
Last week, after realizing I had stopped breathing while reading a news story, I did two things: I stopped reading anything with the words 'Harris' or 'Trump' in it and I made myself a playlist. Both have helped, though I won't pretend they're foolproof. I hope you're making a safe space for yourself on Tuesday, and I hope this time next week will find us not sobbing. How about we focus on some bad-ass women today?
š„ Anora (in theaters)
This was SO much fun to watch. It's a thriller with lots of sex and drugs and gangsters, and also hilarious with really sharp writing. Mikey Madison is brilliant in the title role, as a stripper who marries the son of a Russian billionaire. The director does a particularly good job of carrying you along as the story unfolds, almost making it feel like it was shot in one take. Just a unique, interesting movie. I'll definitely see it again.
š„ Martha (Netflix)
It may shock you to hear, but I am not particularly domestic. In fact, I'm fairly sure that at one point in life, I actively hated Martha Stewart. One thing I learned from this documentary is that I was not alone in that feeling. The world's whitest woman has had a pretty interesting life, though, and it was fun to hear about it. I did not realize what a sham her 'crimes' were and that James Fucking Comey was the one who brought them against her. I also didn't know that her post-prison renaissance began at a roast of Justin Bieber, of all people. Watch this, it's good!
š„ Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains (Kanopy)
When you're in the mood for a cheesy 80s movie filled with awesome outfits, queue this one up. It stars a young Diane Lane and Laura Dern as girls who form a punk band that gains an ardent following across the country. It's uneven and messy and possibly illegal because Lane has a sex scene and I'm pretty sure she wasn't 18 at the time. BUT, fans of Bikini Kill will instantly recognize her stage look and have a whole lot of things click in your head.
See you on the other side, my friends.
xoxo,
Carla
