I love parentheses

I went on one of those modern home tours yesterday, in which you traipse through rich strangers' homes and question where your life went wrong. It was fun! This house was our favorite, with a view of Austin and the surrounding hills that knocks you on your ass. I need to live there, so if y'all could get a GoFundMe together for $15-$20 mill, that'd be great.

My broader point, however, is that interior design is leaning heavily autumnal these days and I don't care for it. Everything is gray, beige, ecru, khaki, maroon, or olive. It's like we've moved into the J.Crew catalog from fall 1993. I know times are bleak, but can we bring back neon?

🎥 Boiling Point (Kanopy)
If you're a fan of The Bear, you'll like this, and if you especially loved the episode they shot in one continuous take, you'll absolutely love this. I am a sucker for one-shot films (Victoria is another one), because the logistics of shooting an entire 90-minute movie in one fell swoop boggles my mind. There are nice little side stories about the characters scattered throughout, and the acting is particularly stellar, from everyone involved. A really nice surprise.

🎥 Midnight Cowboy (Tubi)
There are classic movies that don't live up to the hype (Citizen Kane is boring—I said it.), but this is not one of them. If the name doesn't immediately ring a bell, this is the movie in which Dustin Hoffman barks, "I'm walking here!" in Manhattan traffic. (A line that was ad-libbed by the way). It's the tale of a Texas boy who moves to New York to try his hand as a male prostitute, only to find that making a buck in the big city is a lot harder than it looks. It starts out kind of delightful and warm but ends very sad, and you're in it for the whole damn thing. It deservedly won Best Picture at the 1970 Oscars, signaling the start of New Hollywood and the end of the studio era (for a time).

🎶 What's Wrong with New York, The Dare
If you're like me and mourn the demise of LCD Soundsystem on a regular basis (though they played a secret show in Austin last weekend and I'm incensed I missed it), you should listen to The Dare. It's basically LCD Part Deux. That's all. Just good music for ya brain.

I'm going to see Anora this afternoon and am very excited for it. I hope I haven't overhyped it in my head. I'll report back next week. Have a great one!

xoxo,
