I am not a winter person
I recently learned that Peter Gabriel wrote "Your Eyes" for Rosanna Arquette, which means she had two huge radio hits written for her by two different men. What is her secret? I have questions.
Anyway, Gabriel considered it such a deeply personal song that he almost didn't let them use it in the iconic boombox scene of Say Anything. When they filmed the scene - the last one they shot actually - the song playing was by... wait for it... Fishbone. When the director watched it post-production, he realized how wrong the song choice was. Thank Christ. I can't imagine Lloyd winning back Diane Court with the dulcet tones of "Bonin in the Boneyard."
This anecdote was brought to you by You Couldn't Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and Their Impact on a Generation, a book I just finished but will not recommend because it proved to be as long and tedious as its title. But I got a fun fact out of it.
🎥 Le Bonheur (HBO)
If you're not familiar with Agnes Varda, this is an excellent place to start. Absolutely gorgeous art direction - the colors! - juxtaposed against a scathing undercurrent of "men ain't shit." Wes Anderson's fingerprints are ALL over this.
🎥 The Alabama Solution (HBO)
Nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar, this look at the Alabama prison system will sit with you for a long, long time. It's one of those movies that should be required viewing for every American. Here's all I could muster for my Letterboxd review after watching it: "I’d like to find one goddamn thing in this country that doesn’t exist to line the pockets of white men. Just one."
📖 A Psalm for the Wild-Built
When was the last time you read hopeful dystopia? That's an oxymoron, I know, but since we're living in hell right now, you should transport yourself to another world. This is a lovely little book (way too short) that imagines a future full of respect for every creature, from animal to machine. You'll finish it in a weekend and then stare longingly out your window for a while.
Where ever you are this weekend, I hope you're staying warm and keeping your heart safe.
xoxo,
Carla
