I am easily annoyed
I had been in a lovely mood all weekend, until I paid $16 for a cocktail at a Tex-Mex restaurant last night. This angered me more than it should have and put me in a snit that is still hanging around. Look, cocktails in this town are regularly $16 (and more), but not at a Tex-Mex joint. I didn't come here for artisan simple syrups. I want saccharine margaritas and a plate of gooey cheese that makes me regret all choices for the remainder of the evening. Gah!
🎥 Splitsville and The Roses (in theaters)
In the past week, I have seen two movies that made me laugh out loud, over and over again, in public with other people. Two! Screwball comedies are back, baby. The Roses is a remake of The War of the Roses, an 80s movie about divorce which was super mean actually. This one has its mean moments but is vastly funnier. Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch are just delightful together. And apart.
Splitsville is funnier, though in a different way, and just might endure as a vanguard of a whole new comedy genre. It has an absolutely epic fight scene that I would love to see a behind-the-scenes explanation of and is one of those movies I'll need to watch repeatedly to catch all the jokes. God it was fun.
📖 A Better World
Dystopian suburban angst is a genre that could only exist in our time, and this author, Sarah Langan, has it down cold. I haven't finished reading yet but am tearing through it and really hope the ending satisfies more than her previous novel, Good Neighbors. You'll enjoy it though—think Desperate Housewives crossed with Fallout.
🖥️ Inside the Tent
The newest season of the Great British Baking Show is back, which is another way of saying it's my Happy Season (unless I'm being gouged for a drink). Celebrate by opening up a browser you never use to read this wonderful New Yorker article by Ruby, a finalist from season 9. She had me early in the piece, when she describes Paul Hollywood as having "the alpha saunter of a prison guard." It's funny because it's true!
Have a great week, my friends.
xoxo,
Carla
