Hot stuff
Greetings from the land of second summer, where the calendar may declare today as the autumnal equinox but the gods beg to differ. Every day feels like stepping out into a dog's mouth and you've sweated through your bra by 9 am. Late September is possibly the cruelest time to live in Texas—with the exception of the 21st century. Hey-o!
Sorry I didn't write last week. I threw in a couple extras today to make up for it.
🎥 I Saw the TV Glow (Max)
A completely unique film tackling gender identity and what it's like to be at war with your body. If you want a glimpse into the complexity of being a trans person, watch this. The acting is a bit wooden at times, but I suspect that's an intentional choice to convey the remove you must have when wrestling with your identity. Also, the ending is pretty devastating.
📖 Terrace Story
If you're looking for a read that is fast, fun, and just a bit sad, here you go. I really like the way the narrative flows, looping in and around itself so you have to stop at times and ask, wait is that the same woman who...?
🎶 Girls and its playlist
I finished my rewatch of Girls and highly recommend doing so yourself. Your opinion of Lena Dunham as a horrible person will not change—in fact, it will increase. But good lord the woman can write. And the acting is just stellar across the board. When you're done watching it, you will look up the playlist, because the music supervisor for this show also nailed the hell out of her job.
🖥️ How to Think About Politics Without Wanting to Kill Yourself
"You cannot be a fully moral person and be elected president of the United States."
This is not said nearly enough. It's possible Jimmy Carter is the sole exception, but I'm sure there are some dead civilians in an underdeveloped country who'd beg to differ. As we head towards the endpoint of an interminable election, this essay by Hamilton Nolan is a must-read. You should all vote for Kamala so we don't become Gilead in 2025, but accept the cognitive dissonance of it. Know as absolute fact that all politicians are either enemies or cowards and will always trade your best interests for their access to power. The real power, as he points out, lies in activating ourselves and forcing the cowards to act in accordance.
Rage on, my loves
