Go vote!

I started my day by reading this heartbreakingly beautiful story of a man and his dogs on an adventure. You should too (gift link).

The other tabs I have open are all voting related because I'm taking my daughter to vote for the first time tomorrow. I am unreasonably excited about it, partly for the occasion and partly because I am beyond ready to vote for James and Gina. If you're even considering skipping voting this year, please send me your home address so I can travel there and knock you upside the head. Let me know of any questions.

My movies of late have been meh, so today I dig back into the archives for a couple that are on my essentials list. And a great book too.

🎥 What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (Tubi)
If I could go back in time to a film set, this would be at the top of the list. A cinematic culmination of the decades-long, real-life feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, the tension on the screen just sizzles. A psychological horror story about a crippled former actress (Crawford) who is terrorized by her deranged sister (Davis), it's 2 stellar hours of Hollywood legends devouring the scenery. And each other.

🎥 Black Christmas (Peacock, Prime)
A decidedly weird fact: this slasher horror classic is from the same man who directed A Christmas Story. I hope he was able to unpack his complex holiday issues with a good therapist. There's not much nuance here - sorority sisters are stalked by a psychopath during Christmas break - but it is executed (sorry) perfectly. Genuinely scary with just the right amount of 70s kitsch, a Letterboxd review sums it up perfectly: "Nothing more conceptually terrifying than men."

📖 Harlem Shuffle
Perfection. Books rarely make me exclaim out loud, but this one did several times. I was invested in Ray Carney and his life from page one. It's being turned into an Apple TV series, though I'd have preferred to see it in the hands of Spike Lee. I can't wait to read the other two books.

The weather finally turned in Austin and it's glorious today. Going to stare into the sky and grin like a dope.

xoxo,
Carla
