Fly Season
I love many, many things about my current residence. It is cozy and well-insulated, has the world's best closet, and is smack dab in the middle of town, close to everything. But there is one thing I absolutely hate and that is its preponderance of bugs. Likely because I'm right against a greenbelt, my home is awash in insects. Most specifically, flies. And they're big fuckers too. The one I killed just before writing this was so big, I briefly thought it was a roach.
The flies only appear when the weather warms, so winter is blissful around here. But about 3 weeks ago, one appeared in the kitchen and I said with a deep sigh, "It's fly season."
The weird thing is that I'm kind of afraid of them. My brain knows they're harmless but the fact that they can move through the air unnerves me. They're gross creatures that eat literal shit, are hard to kill, and multiply in droves. But, as I have to remind myself, I am exponentially larger and have many tools at my disposal. They can spend their miserable existence flying in circles around my head but, in the end, I will prevail.
It's fly season in America and will be for a while, unfortunately. But there are more of us than there are of them. And we don't have to put up with their shit.
🎥 One of Them Days (Netflix)
An updated, female version of Friday, this is a hilarious and super-fun watch. Keke Palmer is a treasure and SZA can now add comedian to her long list of talents. What I especially liked is how it embraces Black culture without bothering to explain it to us dumb-ass whites. Yes, I actually googled to find out why one of the residents has a small convenience store in her house. No, I did not find the answer.
📺 Your Friends & Neighbors (Apple TV)
I'll take Complete Inverse of the World Above for $500, Alex. I like this show because Jon Hamm, but am kind of disgusted by the wealth in it. Like, at this point in America, a show full of obscenely wealthy white people might not hit like it used to. At least they're being skewered in White Lotus. And I think this show's creators think they're skewering as well, but when Amanda Peet sulks because he won't pony up $1000 a week for tennis lessons, you kinda want to punch the screen. I'm no longer sure I'm recommending this show, actually. Maybe watch the next one instead.
📺 The Studio (Apple TV)
Now this is skewering. The raves were pouring in before this even debuted, and, though it took till episode 2 for me to get why, I'm all-in now. I have declared my love for Seth Rogen before - his memoir is wonderful - and man can he write. This takedown of Hollywood studio culture has a ton of very fun star cameos, but its core cast, including Kathryn Hahn and Ike Barinholtz, is freaking stellar all on its own. The first 15 minutes of the first episode are an homage to one of my favorite movies, if not almost a direct rip-off. Name that movie and I'll think you're extra-cool.
Oh, Happy Easter to those who celebrate and Happy 4/20 day to the rest of us.
xoxo,
Carla
