Cool cats

I report back from Vegas still single, having found no one worth marrying in that fabulous, horrible city. On our way to the delightful Magic Mike show (that's right. It's like a Broadway show with partial nudity), our cab driver took us a back way to avoid traffic and, mere one street over from the strip, is some of the bleakest landscape in America. It's the ideal metaphor for the town that is the nation's collective id: constant glitter and flash to distract you from the apocalypse simmering in the distance. Before we all go up in flames, how about immersing in some cool?

📺 Diane Von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge (Hulu)
I didn't realize what a bad-ass this woman is, and I bet you don't either. She's had a fascinating life—raised by a mother who was in Auschwitz only 18 months before having her. From almost the very beginning, she's lived exactly as she pleased, no matter others' opinions, and encouraged the women around her to do so as well. Also, hooo did she have some fun in the 70s. I think my favorite anecdote is that Bowie and Mick Jagger asked her to have a threesome and SHE TURNED THEM DOWN. It doesn't get cooler than that.

🎥 The Bikeriders (in theaters)
At the beginning of The Outsiders, when Ponyboy and Johnny meet up with Matt Dillion's character, they ask him what he wants to do and he replies, "Nothing legal, man." It's such a cooly delivered line that it makes you want to put on a leather jacket and hold up a liquor store (but not hurt anyone of course.) Now take that feeling and stretch it to 2 hours over an entire movie and include Tom Hardy and Austin Butler. When you leave the theater, you'll pick up a smoking habit and drive too fast.

🎶 The Wee Small Hours of the Morning
I used to be a night owl, before I discovered the wonders of going to bed at 9:30, and this playlist was in frequent rotation. It's kind of old - the last song was added in 2020 - but that doesn't make it any less awesome. Give it a spin only when it's dark out.
