Adventures in life
Hi hi hiiii. It's been a minute but boy do I have an excuse. I've had what you would call a significant life event, in that my mother died last week. Those of you who know me well know that my relationship with my mother was never good and was essentially non-existent for the past 5 years. I thought I would experience some sort of relief when it finally happened but that hasn't been the case. It doesn't feel much different, actually — I've been grieving the lack of a mother for most of my adult life.
In a bizarre turn of events, one of my closest friends' mother died 3 weeks ago. So I will be attending 2 funerals in the space of one week, mourning 2 women who liked each other but could not have been more different in the mom department. It's going to make for a profoundly weird and sad Thanksgiving. But. Here's something I learned from the first rec below: the fact that I get to experience these things, that I am here on this planet loving and being loved, that I had a crappy mom who made me the human I am today, and then other moms who showed me how it was supposed to go - I'll take it all. What a gift it is that we get to be here and feel all of this.
🎥 Come See Me in the Good Light (Apple TV)
Grab a box of tissues before you turn this on. Yes, a box because you will need more than just one. I think I've told y'all about my obsession with Megan Falley's blogging through her grief at losing her wife Andrea Gibson to cancer. Well they made a documentary in the last year of Andrea's life and it's phenomenal. The director captured so many raw, real, beautiful moments. It's a unique perspective on loss, grief, and living that will stick with you for a while.
🎥 Sorry, Baby (HBO)
One of those first-time-directing movies that makes you wonder what else they're capable of. This is quiet but hilarious and somewhat hard to describe but it hits all its notes perfectly. It's about a woman in some sort of cold climate (Maine maybe?) that has a bad thing happen and how she deals with it. It's just good.
📺 Pluribus (Apple TV)
If there's a better string of words to hear, media-wise, than "new Vince Gilligan series," I don't know what they are. This is so good. Starring Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul, plunked down in a dystopic (or is it?) Earth. That's all you really need to know.
Hugs, friends.
xoxo,
Carla
