A new era dawns

Well I did it. I have completed my parenting duties. Both children are baked and iced and sitting in shiny new boxes and no I'm not sure why I just turned them into cookies. Driving back and forth to Oklahoma City last weekend taught me a few things, primarily that I don't want to make that drive very often at ALL. I did listen to 14 chapters of Harvey Fierstein's memoir though, so it wasn't all bad.

Upon my return, I spent 3 days sad and intermittently weeping and on the fourth day I awoke and said, Ok that's done. I am not an overly sentimental person, a trait that serves me well at times like this. Both my children are living their own lives now, without my involvement in everyday minutia, and I think I've prepared them well for that. We shall see. As for me, time to embark on new adventures. But first, some movies...

Juliet of the Spirits (HBO Max)
The general consensus is that 8 1/2 is Fellini's masterwork, but I've now decided that's only true for men. Women, get thee to this movie posthaste. The story of a middle-aged woman searching for her role in the world now that her husband is cheating on her, this is a delightful, color-saturated exploration of the absurdities we encounter as we age. And the costumes are insanely fabulous. In the end, she realizes that the true path to peace is embracing, and then making room for, the voices in your head. The fact that Fellini was able to effectively portray that is damn impressive.

Sunday Best: The Untold Story of Ed Sullivan (Netflix)
Biggest surprise of my week: learning that Ed Sullivan was woke. This is a well-done documentary about how much he championed Black musicians in a time when it was very unpopular to do so. And it's (obviously) full of great performances.

Surfwise (Prime)
When you're in the mood for a completely bananas, cult-like story, queue up this tale of a narcissistic asshole who raised his nine kids in a RV and forced them to surf. But not one person in his life would label him accurately. This was one of those docs that sent me to Google for 30 minutes after, to see if they're all still surviving. And they are! What a ride, man.

Have a great week!

xoxo,
