A bunch of Posey

Morning, my friends. I woke up remembering Daylight Saving Time (technically not plural, but the added 's' is apparently acceptable so you do you) and had a moment of reminiscence. Back in olden times, before iPhones, it was super important that you remember to set all your clocks forward the night before, lest you wake at the wrong time and miss church (perish the thought). Now of course, we look at our phones immediately upon waking and then stumble around the house in confusion resetting everything else. Or not. My oven is being obstinate, so I guess the kitchen has its own time zone for the next 7 months. Exciting!

🎥 Chaos: The Manson Murders (Netflix)
Things I did not have on my bingo card for 2025: The U.S. becoming part of the Soviet Union, a grown man throwing used gum into the audience from the Oscars stage, and a conspiracy theory linking Charles Manson to the CIA. I wondered why I was watching a documentary on such well-plumbed territory until about 20 minutes in, and then said out loud, "Wait... what?" Were this by any other director than Errol Morris, I wouldn't pay attention. But it is, and it's pretty damn interesting. Watch it so we can discuss!

🎥 Beach Rats (Tubi)
If you watched Babygirl and thought to yourself, "Who the hell is that guy?", watching this movie will answer that question further. Harris Dickinson is one of those people that just has a presence about him, whether going toe-to-toe with Nicole Kidman or playing a 17-year-old exploring his sexuality in the far reaches of Brooklyn. He's a fantastic actor but also seems to walk around with heat lightning inside of him. Flarg.

Parker Posey
Every conversation I have about the current season of White Lotus inevitably ends up at Parker Posey. She is absolutely nailing her role as a zonked-out Southern millionaire's wife. Gen Xers have long known and loved her cool brilliance, so I'm thrilled a new generation is discovering her. Here are a few of my favorites of hers.

Waiting for Guffman: watch her grill a single chicken wing as she smokes in the cold
Party Girl: the apex of 90s indie movies, with awful production value and incredible outfits
The Daytrippers: all-star ensemble comedy with Stanley Tucci, Hope Davis, Liev Schrieber, and Anne Meara!
Kicking & Screaming: if you went to college in the 90s, you must watch this. Immediately. Go right now.
Clockwatchers: with Lisa Kudrow and Toni Collette! A very of-the-time exploration of mindless office life.
The Anniversary Party: I think I watch this movie once a year. An absolute banger ensemble cast, made up mostly of the real-life friends of Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming. Posey plays delightfully against type, as an uptight yuppie full of self-doubt.
And of course, Dazed and Confused: "What are you looking at, bitch? Wipe that face off your head."

Phew, that was a lot of movies. What can I say, she's my indie queen. Have a great week.

xoxo,
Carla
